Spring Home Maintenance Tips

    Spring Home Maintenance Tips

    May 20, 2021

Spring is finally here! Given the brutal winter we had combined with the Covid quarantine, you're likely to want to get outside as soon as possible. “Along with spring cleaning, now is the perfect time to handle some routine home maintenance that’s easier to do in the warmer months,” advises Jeannine Severino, a sales associate with ERA Justin Realty Co.

    Check the Roof and Exterior

With binoculars and a keen eye, you can generally spot roof problems. Cracked or missing shingles should be replaced and clear up any debris like pine needles or branches in the roof peaks. Whether you have wood siding, stucco, or brick look for damaged areas, especially under eaves and near gutter downspouts.

    Prep the Air Conditioning

“Now is the time to make sure the air conditioning is in good working order. Change the filter, check hose connections for leaks, and make sure the drain pans are draining freely,” advisees Jeannine. “You don’t want to wait until the first hot day to discover your AC needs repair.”

    Wash the Windows

Let the sunshine in! Clean your windows -- inside and out. Remove and clean screens as well.  “If you’ve got tough to reach windows, consider hiring a professional to help you,” says Jeannine.

Scrub the Deck and Patio Furniture

“While you are sweeping and clearing the area, look for warped, loose or splintered boards that may need repair,” Jeannine suggests, adding, “Also, if the finish on your wood deck is faded or worn, now is the time to clean, stain, and reseal it. It will be much easier to schedule repairs or maintenance now, before summer season is in full swing. You’ll also want to hose down or wash patio furniture at this time.”

    Clean up the Lawn

Rake the lawn to remove any branches, debris and leaves that you might have missed in the fall. Make sure outdoor water systems—pipes, faucets, and in-ground sprinkler systems—are in working order. And take stock of your garden tools and lawn maintenance equipment, including lawn mowers, trimmers and hoses.

While most home maintenance can be done by the homeowner, some chores -- like HVAC maintenance -- are best handled by a professional.  Contact Jeannine or any of the other experienced agents at ERA Justin Realty at 201.939.7500 to refer you to the trusted home maintenance and repair vendors in your area.
