Thomas Leiper, a Scottish-born tobacco merchant, constructed America’s first working railroad in 1809, using ox-drawn cars to transport stone from his quarry along Ridley Creek. Leiper used 1 Sproul Lane as a guest house for visitors to his nearby estate, located a mile north. In 1808, he built a residence next door known as "Lapidea Manor" for his son, James, which led to 1 Sproul Lane becoming known as “Lapidea Cottage." The home later came into the possession of William Cameron Sproul, a newspaper publisher and state senator who, while residing at Lapidea Cottage, went on to serve as Pennsylvania’s 27th governor from 1919 to 1923.
